In review: Our Hackney Road Pop Up

Thank you to everyone who popped in and joined us for our Pop Up event this past weekend at Hackney Road! If you couldn't come see us, here is what you missed out on:

The Books And All the Rest

The bookshelves were packed with the new and pre-loved books, the poetry, the sales table, and of course all the accessories.

We finally got to display our tote bags, and new accessories to the world. People seemed to love the funny and statement stickers which were flying off the shelves!

The Entertainment

We had a little competition going on in the shop as well! An 'A Sceptic's Bookshelf' signature tote bag and a £20 gift voucher to use in our web shop was up for grabs for anyone who wanted to participate by creating a Haiku poem with newspaper cut outs.

I'm delighted to announce the winning poem below, enjoy it!

Cut-out words on wood form a collage: "No sanctuary of the magic fire light into nature’s thrall" on a white background.

We did of course bring our chess board this time around as well. It proved just as popular this time as it did the last time!

Two empty chairs face a small table with a chessboard. Sunlight casts diagonal shadows on the white brick wall behind.
A few games were played on the chessboard this weekend as well!

The People

People browsing books at a store, one reading, another with a dog in a yellow bandana. Bright interior, "POETRY" sign visible. Calm mood.

Selling books with a purpose, and that are niche, is not always easy when you are mainly based online. You need to constantly fight with algorithms, larger competitors and corporations underselling you, but more so because you never really get to hear people's opinions and thoughts. Most of the feedback that I received on the weekend was about the concept of my store, the curation and selection of books and accessories, and the lovely space (although I cannot take any cred for the last one at all).

I cannot begin to tell you how affirming and uplifting it is to meet so many likeminded people who understood the concept, bought in to it and supports it wholeheartedly. This part in particular was my favourite take away from the pop up this weekend.

The Pop Up Venue at Hackney Road

I was so lucky to have found SITE for this pop up. The space has often been used for exhibitions and other pop ups and was incredibly bright and spacious - a perfect space to browse and read books.

It got really busy at times during the days but you still had plenty of space to move around and browse at your own leisure. The large windows and the garden space at the back brought in much natural light that worked really well with the stripped back, industrial style of the interior.

The Conclusion

As much as I can go on about the weekend itself, it all boils down to just wanting to say a huge thank you to everyone who paid a visit to the shop, everyone who shared their kind words with which keeps me going, and to my family and friends who supported and helped me selflessly over the weekend. It wouldn't have been such a great event without any of you!

The Next Pop Up

While we are taking it all in from this amazing weekend, we will shortly start preparing for the next pop up that we have planned. Click the button to find out information about our upcoming events as and when they will become available.
